What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple ratio of weight to height, used as a quick screening tool to flag whether someone's weight falls in a typical range for their height. It's calculated as weight (kg) divided by height (m) squared.

Limitations of BMI

BMI doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, doesn't account for where fat is stored, and uses the same ranges regardless of age, sex, or ethnicity — so a muscular athlete and someone with low muscle mass can share the same BMI with very different health profiles. It's a starting point for a conversation, not a diagnosis.

Is a BMI in the healthy range always healthy?

Not necessarily — someone can be in the "healthy" BMI range and still have high body fat and low muscle (sometimes called "skinny fat"), or be outside it and be very fit. Waist circumference, body fat percentage, and how someone actually feels and performs matter alongside BMI, not instead of it.
